Welcome To Independence

For over 25 years,
I have enjoyed a fulfilling career in the independent financial services
industry. I never had any intention of working in this industry, but like a lot of people, I had the good fortune to stumble into it.

Most of my career has been spent as a consultant/recruiter focused on working with
advisors in transition, with a particular focus on those considering Going Independent-
or as I like to call it "Going Indie". As I look back, I am amazed at how the industry has
grown and evolved, and I am grateful to have been part of it in some small way.

Taking a consultative approach to educating and guiding advisors meant keeping up
with the rapidly changing and expanding landscape of options and resources available,
as well as the broader industry trends affecting advisors and firms.

I became a student of the industry and as the industry matured and evolved, I had a
front-row seat to the opportunities and challenges facing advisors operating and
growing an independent practice or "Growing Indie". This was a catalyst for me to take
a deeper dive into the themes and concepts of business ownership and
entrepreneurship. This furthered my interest and passion for not only the independent
financial services industry – but all things "Indie". I've learned a lot that has helped me
grow both personally and professionally.

I have been much more of a consumer of content than a creator of it. There is a lot of
great content out there and as an introvert, I have always been more comfortable
sharing knowledge, thoughts, and information through conversations. I've always had
the best intentions of creating more content and have a collection of drafts and
campaigns that have not seen the light of day. Ideas come naturally, but writing is
difficult for me.

I created this page "Indie Island" as my content oasis to share some thoughts,
observations insights, and experiences. I am stepping out of my comfort zone and
taking on the challenge of creating and sharing more content. The name Indie Island
comes from a post I wrote back in 2007 called "Surviving on Indie Island" – I am a fan of
analogies and particularly fond of this one. I'm currently working on a reboot of that
piece- so stay tuned.
